Netsal update

Kia ora koutou,

We have received an inquiry from a reporter at The Press regarding an update to our Netsal Centre project.

I wanted you all to see the information we are sending back to The Press before it goes into the public arena.

If you have any further questions, please get back to me. I am committed to keeping you totally informed about progress on this project.

Ngā mihi, Anna

Has that independent review been completed? Yes the review by PwC has been completed. We have been encouraged by their findings. We asked for them to review our ‘worst-case scenario’ data in terms of facility utilisation. The PwC report has given our board the additional layer of assurance that was needed regarding the Netsal Business Case.  This in turn has given us the confidence to forge ahead, eyes wide open, understanding the risks and the levers we have available to us.

What were the findings of the review? The review has provided us with clear view on how we are anticipating delivering the game within our new facility.  We are anticipating that netball will be delivered over dual sites initially, this will allow us flexibility in the competition structure.  We also have allowed for training inside, which is important for a quality netball experience.  We are looking forward to collaborating with other sports organisations in our city to provide a wide range of activities at Netsal.

Is CNC still committed to building the Netsal Centre? Yes absolutely – 100 per cent. Our players need to play indoors – that is how the modern game is played.

Netsal was supposed to be open in January 2022, can this still happen? If not, when will it be open? As a sporting body, the Christchurch Netball Centre is celebrating its centenary in October this year. As part of this celebration we are holding a sod-turning event to mark the start of the construction process.

When will building begin? See above.

Has CNC secured any further funding for the centre, over and above the $10m donation? Our focus has been on further developing our business plan and ensuring in developing the indoor centre we are meeting the needs of our community. We have not yet launched a public fund-raising campaign, but we will at an appropriate time when our planning is further down the track.

Has CNC sold its Hagley Park centre to the council? If not, why not? Are negotiations still ongoing?

Negotiations with the Christchurch City Council are on-going. We are currently working on a transition plan for a move from the Centre.
